Ever since Best Buy purchased Future Shop for $ 580 million in 2001, many said the writing was on the wall for Future Shop – Canada’s largest electronics store and part of the Canadian way of life for 33 years.  Earlier this year, Future Shop was closed and 65 of them re-opened as Best Buy stores, increasing their number to 192 locations.  It looks like this was done in preparation for their next move as Best Buy Canada announced today that Canadians will find it easier than ever to shop with Best Buy.  Customers will have access to larger assortment of products at BestBuy.ca through a new ‘Marketplace.’  Best Buy is always on the forefront of offering up specials and taking pre-orders for new mobile devices.

Best Buy’s Marketplace will be launching in the coming months – certainly before the holiday season – and by partnering up with other retailers agreeing to sell their products through the Marketplace, consumers will be able to benefit from one-stop shopping.  The Marketplace will somewhat emulate Amazon and eBay…selling many different products through Best Buy’s channels. Thierry Hay-Sabourin, Vice President of eCommerce, Best Buy Canada said, “We are investing millions of dollars in our stores and online in order to enhance the customer experience and this is an important step.  We have built a Total Retail shopping experience that allows customers to shop however they want, in our stores, on the device of their choice and always at the best price through Best Buy and BestBuy.ca.”

Best Buy Canada is launching the ‘Marketplace’ in segments – the ‘Delivery Promise’ was introduced this past March to help take the guesswork out of shipping times.  This is a new web tool that gives the customer a realistic expected arrival date BEFORE an actual order for the item is even placed.  If available, it will also notify of a faster delivery option, for each item.  Another feature being launched this month is called ‘Ship-from-store’ that will look at all 192 stores and treat them as a huge ‘warehouse’ and ship your item for any store that has the item in-stock.  This will cut-down on ‘Out of Stock’ messages and allow customers to get their products faster.

Other Canadian retailers that may not have Best Buy’s resources can use their infrastructure to sell their products through Best Buy’s Marketplace…for a percentage, of course.  Hay-Sabourin said, “While we’re excited to partner with other Canadian retailers on Marketplace, we’re even more excited to continue innovating in the online space to provide our customers with an unparalleled experience.  We want to continue to bring the greatest assortment of products to our customers, and help retailers succeed, which is why are inviting other Canadian retailers to join us on our online Marketplace and enjoy our world-class eCommerce capabilities.”
